A return to the roots
From engineering tools to social blueprints: the story behind Gram Sansad.
In a world where many chase urban dreams, Brajesha Sharma chose a different path: a return to the villages, where the heart of India beats. He traded a conventional engineering career for a mission-driven life centred on rural empowerment, and today leads a movement to reimagine rural governance, making panchayats engines of local prosperity and sustainability.
Born and raised in Bihar, he saw early the gap between policy promises and rural realities. Though qualified as an engineer, his heart stayed with the soil that raised him, and he moved from engineering tools to social blueprints, designing solutions for people who are rarely heard in policymaking.
He founded Gram Sansad as the flagship initiative of the Random Variable Foundation: a knowledge and action platform that merges indigenous wisdom with scientific insight, so that rural communities are not just consulted but co-create their own development.
His vision is a National Executive Body of Gram Sansad, mirrored by state and district bodies that coordinate, innovate and advocate for the Localised SDGs, and panchayats that become economically self-reliant institutions able to generate Own Source Revenue and steer their own growth with accountability and dignity.
Through capacity building, policy engagement and grassroots interventions such as Bazar Sampark and Linkages & Nirman, Gram Sansad connects rural governance with markets, ministries, civil society and academia, and has mainstreamed the nine LSDG themes in local planning so that India’s SDG commitments find real traction in the Gram Sabha.
What makes his journey remarkable is the trust he has earned across sectors, from the Ministry of Panchayati Raj to the state governments of Bihar, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Jharkhand and Maharashtra, who now see Gram Sansad as a credible rural innovation partner.
